- The man had later released all the hostages unharmed.
In Ukraine, a 12-hour hostage situation finally came to an end when the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, complied to publicly endorse a 2005 documentary called Earthlings, narrated by Joaquin Phoenix.
The attacker identified as Maksym Kryvosh, who is 44 years old, held the people in a bus hostage. At one point, Kryvosh fired shots and threw explosives, which did not detonate.
“There were unclear demands and it was hard to understand why it was happening. It took time to understand,” the President said in a video released by the presidential press service.
One of Kryvosh’s demands included for a senior politician to state publicly that he was a terrorist.
Zelensky also stated that it was possibly discussed for a special assault operation to be put into action, however the plan was dismissed as it was too risky for the hostages.
But to come to terms with the hostage-taker, the President had a 7 to 8 minutes conversation during which it was agreed 3 people- a wounded person, a pregnant woman and a child- would be released in exchange for endorsing the film.
Volodymyr Zelensky then posted a short video in Facebook with the words “Everyone should watch the 2005 film Earthlings.”
Earthlings, narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, is a documentary which focuses on animal abuse. It also gives snippets of the practices of major world industries that rely on animals. The documentary had won several minor film festivals.
“After the video was published on social networks, we would release all the rest in half an hour,” Mr Zelensky said. “Everything happened almost like that. In 30-40 minutes, he released all hostages.”
All of the hostages were left unharmed; However, the gunman did seriously pose a threat as he had several fully functioning firearms.
The gunman had also stated that he had placed an explosive in the city centre. Police cordoned off the city centre and told for the residents to stay at home until the danger had been found.
However, it still remains unclear whether an explosive have been found or not.
