Fahim Salem, 33, co-founder of the Nigerian motorcycle ride-sharing service Gokada was found dead in his apartment two days after the killing.
Tyrese Devon Haspil, 21, used to be Fahim Salem’s executive assistant. His duties included handling Saleh’s finances and personal business. He is charged with second-degree murder in the horrifying incident of brutally killing Fahim Saleh.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison said that Haspil owed Fahim Saleh a “significant amount of money.” Police sources put the amount in excess of $100,000.
The motive of the murder seems to be a dispute over money.
Sources state, detectives have also recovered text messages from Saleh’s phone where Saleh has accused Haspil for stealing his money.
Haspil killed Salem inside his $2 million Lower East Side condo with a Taser, a knife and an electrical saw and then dismembering him.
Sources claim Haspil’s credit card was used to purchase the electric saw and cleaning products found at the victim’s apartment. The credit card was also used to pay for the suspect’s rides to and from the location.
Autopsy results revealed on Thursday that Saleh was tasered and stabbed multiple times on his body before his body was dismembered.
In a surveillance footage obtained from 265 East Houston apartment building, it can be seen Saleh was followed by a man wearing a black suit and mask into an elevator. The masked man is believed to be Haspil.
Saleh, dressed in shorts and a t-shirt appeared suspicious in the footage. The footage also shows the victim collapsing to the floor as the elevator door opened directly into Saleh’s full-floor apartment.
Once the elevator door closed and concealed the elevator’s camera view what happened next could not be recorded.
Police declared that Haspil assaulted his boss. Though it’s not clear whether Haspil killed or dismembered his boss, Detective Harrison has confirmed that Haspil assaulted Saleh with a taser on Monday at about 1.45 pm at the apartment.
Police have only confirmed that Haspil assaulted his boss. It is not yet clear if Haspil is also accused of killing and dismembering Saleh.
When the police arrived at the crime scene i.e. at Saleh’s apartment, Saleh’s torso was found in the corner of his living room a nd his head, arms and legs had been separated into plastic bags.
Sources tell that the killer returned to Saleh’s apartment on Tuesday to dismember the tech entrepreneur’s body. Law enforcement officials say the suspected killer might have been waiting for Saleh’s blood to coagulate before dismembering him.
When police arrived at the scene, Saleh’s torso was found in the corner of his living room and his head, arms, and legs had been separated into plastic bags.
An electric saw, a vacuum cleaner and cleaning products were still found in the crime scene.
Saleh’s cousin entered the building to check upon him that’s when he pressed the buzzer of the apartment alerting the killer. Hence the killer could not dispose of the remains and fled the building through a fire escape.
Fahim Saleh was born in Saudi Arabia but grew up in New York in a Bengali family. Saleh was the chief executive officer of a courier delivery via a motorcycle startup called Gokada that began operating in Nigeria in 2018.
Police sources said initially they believed the murder was financially motivated and likely the fatal result of a soured business deal.
